Membership

Introduction

ISBIS membership is open to all individuals and organisations with a professional interest in any aspect of business, financial and industrial statistics, including:

  • Research, teaching, training and consulting;
  • Involvement in the use of statistics in areas such as quality improvement, software development, financial statistics, business and management, etc.

Types of membership

  • Individual membership;
  • Membership option for people in a developing country;
  • Student membership;
  • Institutional membership.

Individual membership

ISBIS has adopted the 'cafeteria' system of fees that is in place for other ISI Sections. This system aims at establishing a closer connection between what members pay and what they receive. Members pay a basic fee, which entitles them to the benefits of belonging to an international community of statisticians. They receive a number of publications, including the ISI/Sections membership directory, and the ISI Newsletter. They may also subscribe to the International Statistical Review (ISR) at a discounted price. Furthermore, they may subscribe to future ISBIS journals or publications at discounted prices. Members also benefit from reduced registration fees for regular conferences such as ISI meetings, ISBIS and other ISBIS/ISI organised meetings.

Membership option for People from Developing Countries

ISBIS recognises that the standard fees for Section membership may be beyond the resources of people from a developing country (list of qualifying countries). In response, it offers two options:

  • People from a developing country may receive a discount of approximately 50% on the normal membership fees. See the membership application form for details;
  • Affiliate Membership, which is, in effect, an electronic-only membership.

Affiliate Membership

In any given developing country, people interested in Business and Industrial Statistics (BIS) should form a BIS Group within their national statistical society. The BIS Group membership dues will be collected by the national society, a component of which will be reserved for Sub-Section membership of ISBIS. The Sub-Section membership fee is €12. Of course, the BIS Group may charge a higher fee should it wish to retain some funds for its own operating purposes.

Once a year, the BIS Group will send a list of BIS Group members' names, affiliations, and contact information (mail and e-mail addresses, phone, fax, website) to ISBIS, together with a Group membership fee of €12 per Group Member. These people become ISBIS Affiliate Members. They are entitled to the following benefits:

  • Access to all electronic resources that are available to ordinary ISBIS members;
  • ISBIS member rates for conferences, workshops, publications (unless better rates are available to people from developing countries);
  • Recognition as Section Affiliate members by the ISI (see below).

As a Section of the ISI, ISBIS will pay an annual capitation fee of €6 per Affiliate Member to the ISI on behalf of that regional BIS Group (and similarly for other such Groups), and the usual ISI capitation fee for ordinary ISBIS members. ISI Section Affiliate members will be entitled to:

  • Access to all ISI electronic resources that are available to ordinary ISBIS members;
  • Section rates for ISI conferences and workshops (unless better rates are available to people from developing countries);
  • Listing in any ISI online membership directory.

For developing countries where there is no national statistical society, the suggestion is that individuals from these countries join one of the regional national societies, which will then need to follow the procedure as outlined above.

To become an affiliate member contact your national or regional statistical society and ask them to contact the ISBIS Executive Committee () to set the procedure in motion.

Student Membership

Student membership of ISBIS is free for 2 years at present, for full time students. Student members do not have voting privileges (see statutes). In order to become a student member, you need to obtain a letter from your department indicating that you are a full time student, and to either fax or e-mail this to the president or VP-membership.

Institutional Membership

As an Institutional Member of ISBIS, you will of course be making a significant contribution towards supporting the work of the Society in pursuing its mission. However, there are significant direct benefits to your organization. These include:

  • The opportunity to participate directly in ISBIS's activities;
  • Your corporate logo displayed on web site and on all promotional material;
  • Your organization will receive one copy of any journals or newsletters published and 3 designated representatives enjoy lower registration fees at ISBIS-sponsored conferences;
  • Through ISBIS's affiliation with the ISI, Institutional Members also receive the ISI Newsletter.
